Baling/silage
Our straw baling, grass and maize silageing operations form an important part of the Scott & Scott farming business. We have a modern set of machinery and equipment which is skilfully operated by our experienced work force. In addition to grass silage, we offer a full maize silage contract from drilling through to cutting and clamping. Each year, operating throughout East Anglia, we cover a large area of both our own and contracted ground.
Our straw is baled with MF 2190 Balers powered by JCB 8250 Fastracs. These are well matched units that have proven ideal for producing both the output and quality of bale that we need.
Our baling is done as soon as possible behind the combine to ensure that the condition of the straw and moisture content is to the high standard that our contracts require.
The speed of the baling and clearing is further enhanced by our use of self-loading 'chaser trailers' which provide a one man operated loading, carting and stacking system as the following series of pictures show:
The JCB Fastrac has a bale alignment bumper fitted to it's front linkage.
The driver uses the alignment bumper to nudge the bale into the correct pick- up position for the trailer's self loading arm.

The trailer swings into an offset position and the pick-up arm locates into the bale.

The pick-up arm lifts the captured bale up and over onto the trailer.

The bale is loaded either onto the bed of the trailer or onto the bale previously loaded as shown here. The loaded bales then all move one bale space to the rear to allow room at the front for the next bale to be loaded.

The loaded trailer, re-aligned behind the Fastrac, is then driven to the stack yard for unloading.

The trailer is tipped slightly to improve the driver's visibility to the rear. He is then able to carefully reverse to the bale stack. The two front bales are automatically raised to provide a securing horizontal overlap onto the previously tipped bales. Having reversed into the correct stacking position the trailer is then fully tipped and unloaded tightly against the stack.

The empty trailer is then lowered and driven back to the harvest field to collect another load.
Our modern machinery and equipment makes this a complete one man loading, carting and stacking operation . We are able to quickly and efficiently clear the fields ready for the next year's cultivations and drilling to begin at the optimum time.
The stacked straw bales are then loaded during the winter and are distributed throughout this country and near continent . There they are used as Power Station fuel, cattle bedding, composting and for many other purposes.
Scott & Scott are well equiped with modern machinery to fulfil our grass and maize silage contracts.
Grass mowing is done by a JCB 3220 Fastrac mounted front and rear with three CLAAS mowers.
JCB 8250 Fastracs hauling our high capacity tri-axle silage trailers keep our Forage Harvester working hard.

Our new JCB 434S Loading Shovel makes a superb job of loading and compacting the silage clamp.
It is shown here compacting Maize Silage on a clamp at Ashdon, Essex during the 2008 season.
